Topic/Theme/Purpose Statement
This unit based off of the book "Holes" by Louis Sachar allows for many avenues of learning. The students will learn how to use deductive reasoning while reading to answer critical thinking questions presented to them. The students will also participate in a student-centered learning through their vocabulary words. They each will be responsible for finding new and interesting words throughout their text, and it will prepare them for the future.
The themes that are presented in the book "Holes" is perseverance and friendship. The author of "Holes," Louis Sachar, tries to display throughout the book the benefits of friendship. It also helps the reader identify true friends from friend who use you for their own benefit. My students will see the relationships of the characters, and hopefully relate themselves to those characters through discussion and blog postings. The main character of "Holes," Stanley, and his family have had tough times, but they still stayed true to who they were and made it through. My students will hopefully see how this quality of perseverance is important in life, and is something that can be sought after.
Throughout our lessons I want my students to be thinking about how they can relate to "Holes." The book may not seem like something that would ever happen in their lives, but the emotions that are going on are so real. It is important for the students to understand the hardships, joys, trials, and triumphs that are happening and to see how they have these feelings in their everyday life.
